60-Second Geography

Greece and the Greek Islands

Greece is the birthplace of European civilization. Early Greek philosophers and playrights shaped all of western thought with an influence so profound its impact is still alive today. Classical Greece developed the ideals of democracy and its architectural accomplishments continue to provide inpiration. Yet, much of its culture is very distinct from Western Europe – its alphabet is Cyrillic rather than Roman and its church Orthodox Greek rather than Roman Catholic.

  • The capital of Greece is Athens, where many of the great landmarks of western civilization such as the Acropolis can be seen and are easily accessible.
  • Within an easy drive of Athens many of the sites important to faith based tourism such as Thessaloniki and Corinth are available.
  • The Greek Islands remain high on every traveler’s “must see” list. The warm Mediterranean climate and the inviting culture that welcomes visitors makes the Greek Islands one of the most attractive destinations anywhere.
  • 70% of tourist arrivals are in the months from May to September.
  • Each of the Greek islands offers a unique culture and venue. Some offer fine beaches and sophisticated resort accommodations while others are rustic and retain the more traditional Greek village ambiance.
  • The topography of Greece is wonderfully mountainous with ranges extending into the sea as peninsulas or chains of islands.
  • Greece is one of the most affordable of European destinations.
