Big Ideas: Don’t lose your balance

Several weeks ago, I was speaking to an international audience (50 countries were represented) from a Fortune 100 company. I opened by asking the audience to lift one leg off the ground and to hold that position. This was an easy exercise — balancing on one leg, anyone can do that. I congratulated them on their athletic prowess. I then approached one executive and with one finger; and I quickly and effortlessly put an end to his balancing act.

In all probability they all likely felt much grounded and balanced in their jobs and their personal lives. It would be very easy however, to approach each executive and knock them over one after the other with a single finger. I could destroy their balancing act with very little effort. Once they placed their two feet back on the floor, however, they maintained solid balance with a firm foundation.

And even a two legged foundation is not that stable. How can one improve on a two-legged foundation? With a three-legged one of course! The three legs I was referring to with this group happened to be attitude, nutrition, and exercise. With these three legs firmly in place, it would be difficult to knock any of them off balance. Try knocking over a 3-legged stool with a simple push. It can’t be done.

As soon as you begin to think right, eat right and exercise daily, you will establish a complete and total balance in your life; and strong enough to withstand any oncoming forces. So, what does this have to do with your travel business? Everything!

Business skills and knowledge come from experience. It is your responsibility to portray a positive attitude, maintain a proper diet, and exercise daily if you want to have a shot at becoming the exception. If you don’t want the shot, well, that’s your call.

Why is this so important? The world is becoming one overweight planet. Obesity is an epidemic that needs to be addressed right now. Negative, whining, boring individuals are beginning to think that we are interested in their problems.

Remember you can’t change the world, but you can change your world. Begin with your attitude. Then, focus on your eating habits. And finally, exercise (walk) 15 minutes a day. (C’mon. Fifteen stinking minutes!)

Anything you can do, that you are not doing today, is a major step in the right direction. Get balanced. Start today.
