How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Life is Messy

“Life is messy and you are going to be right only sometimes.”

How To Fail At Almost Everything And Still Win Big: Scott Adams, page 139

Here I go again using a few sporting analogies to drive my point home. The best hitters in professional baseball fail seven out of 10 times. An attractive field goal percentage in professional basketball is still around 50%. A PGA golfer sinks putts between 5 and 10 feet around 55% of the time. These stats serve as a reminder that things will not always work for you.

There is only one thing messier than life itself, and that is business. You are definitely going to get things right sometimes, but do not get too comfortable when you do. Things are about to change.

At times you may prove to be your worst enemy but most of the time simple uncertainties of life will find their way into your well-oiled plan. You can bemoan your plight if that makes you feel better. The answer however, is to have enough projects in the hopper that you simply move on to the next opportunity, or fix the current one.

One of my favorite quotes is from the former chairman of the QVC Shopping Channel, Barry Dillar. He once was asked how he felt after losing $1 billion negotiation. “How do I feel?” he said. “They won. We lost. Who is next?”

Bottom Line: My question to you: Who’s next?
