Spin Selling: The Devil is in the Details

“Perhaps the most important conclusion I’ve come to is about the importance of details.”

Spin Selling — Neil Rackham, page 159

Last March, I took a ride up to Port St. Lucie to watch The New York Mets kick-off their spring training rituals. Knowing a little bit about the game, I should not have been surprised at what I was watching.

A field full of wealthy athletes, dressed in costumes, were practicing the same drills I used to practice in high school and college. Their coaches were drilling the basics and fundamentals into these guys like they were kids. (Very interesting.)

Earlier in the month I attended the Honda Golf Classic. Once again, I watched the coaches of these finely-tuned millionaires going through drills on the practice range both before and after their scheduled match. (Very interesting.)

My message today could involve actors, singers, musicians, Olympic athletes, and others. The surest route to a successful performance is through practice and adherence to the details. (A sidebar here is that all high-level performers have coaches.)

There is an old saying that reminds us: “The devil is in the details.” No truer words have ever been spoken.

Basics, fundamentals and attention to details will lead you to your business goals and objectives. (And proper instruction from a qualified coach.)
