No more shiny objects for you

If you’ve been in this business for very long, it’s likely at some point you’ve found yourself completely overwhelmed with the things you’re supposed to do. Are you on social media? Do you have this app? What about this CRM? Have you done this online course? What about listening to this marketing pitch? It’s hard to know who to pay attention to, where to invest your money, and how to most wisely use the only asset you really have — your time.

There is certainly no shortage of companies offering some kind of service, training course, or certification designed to help you grow your business. The issue, of course, is that not every solution works for everyone. It’s easy to burn through hundreds of dollars and countless hours of your time without seeing any results.

Over the years we’ve tried just about everything — marketing coaches, social media companies, ad campaigns, etc. You name it, we’ve probably tried it. Some of the things we invested in were a great success. Others were monumental failures. But there’s a lot to be gained by learning what doesn’t work.

Last year we had a million projects going on. We built a new website. We created new marketing materials, press releases, and more. By the end of the year, I was completely burnt out.

So our theme for this year has been “no more shiny objects.” There have been no projects, no new materials, no training courses, no new ad campaigns — nothing! Other than a couple of FAM trips, this year has been all about providing great service and building our sales. Nothing else. And the interesting thing is, that seems to be enough. We’re swamped!

Taking a step back and forcing ourselves to work with what we already have has been an interesting experience. As a type A personality, I feel as though I always have to be challenging myself. Challenging myself to do nothing new has actually been a challenge in itself. And I have to say, it’s a challenge I am very much enjoying! How about you?
