Tier One Travel – Man it’s slow, time to clean up

Like it said in the Editorial Musings, I’m in the summer doldrums business-wise. If clients are going away for summer holidays, it’s done and for fall travel it’s just taking care of the final details and putting the documents together.

This is how I’ve been spending my workdays lately:

Training and professional development – Besides the educational programs that suppliers and destinations offer, I’m also looking at ClientBase and GDS learning opportunities. I know I’m not using all of the features of ClientBase, and there’s more that will be beneficial. As I’ve been around for a long time, I was using Galileo Desktop. Since this will be phased out shortly, I’ve been getting along much better with Smart Point and now I’m ready to go beyond the basics. I want to make sure that I’m using these tools to their full capacity so I can work smarter when the busy season starts.

I’m also working on ways I can add value to my clients’ travels. I’m creating some trip notes that I can customize and include with their documents. Here’s an except:

STAYING HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELING

  • Use a wet wipe to wipe your tray table, armrests and in-flight entertainment controls.
  • Use the plastic bag that your blanket comes in (or bring a bag with you for domestic flights) to line the seat pocket in front of you before you put you personal items in. It’s one of the dirtiest places on a plane.

CAR RENTALS

  • Make sure you know if you’re signing/initialing to accept or decline things.
  • Confirm with your credit card provider that you have CDW coverage included.

I’ve also taken some time to clean up my digital world. It’s been a while since I’ve done a clean up on my computer. I was shocked at how many documents I had saved; not to mention the photos that should have been deleted in the first place. Even just editing my favorites and bookmarks is cathartic.

Lastly, it’s time for a good old fashioned desk clean out—how many dried-out pens does one really need? Ten or fifteen years ago, we were being told that our industry would become paperless; that’s not me. We are not there yet for sure. But, I am going to reduce the amount of paper I deal with by putting some important papers in storage and shredding others.

Onward!
