Hot Button Marketing: How Is Your Message Received?

“People see and hear the message in a variety of ways”

Hot Button Marketing by Barry Feig, page 28

This is a very important reminder, as we all have a tendency to believe that people are thinking along the lines of our current thoughts. In most cases, nothing could be further from the truth.

With so much noise in the world coming at us all from all directions, it seems that true communication is fast becoming a lost art. Listening is hard enough to come by. Actually hearing what is being said has become a lost art.

The fact is that for proper communication to take place, there needs to be a sender in the receiver. When we are the sender, we think that people receive our messages correctly and with no need for further interpretation.

People have their own biases when receiving and attempting to internalize new information. Some would rather hear it, while others prefer to read it. Some interpret the meaning of every word spoken, while others pay more attention to body language. Some don’t listen at all, assuming they already know what is being said.

The bottom line is that for you to be interpreted properly, you must deliver what it is you’re trying to share in a medium that is appreciated.

Therefore to safeguard your marketing efforts, you must deliver your messages in various methods. Email, letters, blog posts, postcards, audio snippets, and videos are all available options for today’s marketer.
