Start your day off on the right foot!

Good morning! Or is it? How important is it to start your day with good habits and the right frame of mind? Research shows it’s critical! How you start your day has far-reaching positive and negative ramifications that affect work, personal life, and your overall well-being. We’ve all started the day in a panic because we are running late or need to immediately go into crisis mode, only to see the morning hours fade and the rest of the day be unproductive. There are days we wrap up work and feel elated and pleased with the services we have provided and the impact we’ve made; then there are other days when burn out and allow negativity to set in. Believe it or not, the first few minutes of your waking hours set the tone and paves the way for how you experience everything throughout the rest of your day.

One particular habit that needs to go is checking your phone and emails immediately upon waking; this is cited as the worst way to start your day. Evidence shows the most successful business leaders and CEO’s do not immediately check emails. They invest the time in planning and preparation for the day ahead. More importantly, research on productivity and happiness levels also supports that having a better day begins with a mindful morning and purposefully omits technology first thing. There are many variations on this suggested plan, but here is one outline that has proven useful.

  1. Hydrate upon waking by drinking at least one full glass of water
  2. Find a calm, quiet place to reflect and take a few minutes to reflect and establish positivity for the day. Utilize a journal to express gratitude and think about what/whom you are grateful for.
  3. Think about what you are looking forward to in your day and what excites you.
  4. With a larger goal or personal purpose in mind, check the plans for your day to be sure they align with that goal and purpose. Stay connected to achieving your goal.
  5. Make a plan within your day to reach out, thank, or serve someone and note who that will be.
  6. Eat a high protein/low sugar breakfast and then move your body! Take a brisk walk or do yoga, just get moving for at least 15 minutes.
  7. Review your to-do lists and appointments and visualize successfully completing them.

By investing 30 minutes in the morning routine above, you’ll better prepared for the day and set your self up for winning results!
