The Pursuit of WOW!: We Need to Fail More

“Almost nothing, small or large, was ever accomplished without setback after setback after setback.”

The Pursuit of WOW! by Tom Peters, page 49

You are probably expecting me to start reciting a litany of names of the famous people we all know have failed their way to success. “Like who?” you ask. Oprah Winfrey. Thomas Edison. Bill Gates. Winston Churchill. Abe Lincoln. Mike Piazza, and I could go on and on and on. But I won’t.

The message, of course, has everything to do with the fact that we learn from our mistakes. Without them, you will not progress beyond your current comfort zone. You will become stagnant. Predictable. Boring.

I can’t think of anything worse than becoming stagnant, predictable, and boring.

We need to grow. We need to keep on learning. We need to achieve more and better results. We need to fail more.

For years I have been suggesting failure as the quickest, shortest, and most direct route to the Promised Land. The fact that I am speaking to mature adults (in the majority of cases) explains why my suggestion is falling on deaf ears. Adults do not like to fail. They think they are beyond such behavior. This is sad news at the very best.

Show me an enthusiastic, carefree, creative, and self-confident travel professional who does not default to the safety zone and I will show you our next successful entrepreneur.
