Emotional Intelligence: Keep Calm and Be Professional

“Benjamin Franklin said it best: ‘Anger is never without a reason, but seldom good one.’”

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Coleman, page 59

Heaven knows there is plenty to be angry about these days.  Just pick up the morning paper or browse your news feeds, and you will be “loaded for bear” before you finish your first cup of coffee.

Just as Benny suggested, you have plenty of reasons to get the hair on the back of your neck pointing toward the nearest fire alarm.  But let’s look at this subject calmly, and if possible in a more mature vein. (If you are pissed off for any reason as you read this, stop reading and come back later when you are not seeing double.)

A lot of things are going on when you become angry. In the interest of brevity, I am not going to list the ten thousand reasons that might have gotten you into a tizzy in the first place. I’m cutting to the after effect.

1.Your blood pressure surges to dangerous levels in seconds and, depending on the situation, keeps on rising. You may even be courting a heart attack.
2. In many, if not most cases, you will hit your listener’s hot buttons and both of you will soon be saying things you either know nothing about or you wish you hadn’t said.
3. Your legitimate complaint will go unheard and nothing, absolutely nothing, will change until you reach your anger zenith and begin cooling down.
4. Your face will become ridiculously distorted and you risk somebody capturing a photo of your rant, which will later be displayed around the world on Facebook.

I suppose I could go on with one hundred more negative examples stemming from your loss of control, but I think you are getting the picture. You are a professional. Stay Calm!
