Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book: Believe in Your Next Shot

“I want you to believe with all your heart that the shot you are about to hit will be a good one. I want you to have total confidence.”

Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings From a Lifetime In Golf by Harvey Penick with Bud Shrake, page 71

Belief in oneself is not only important, it is also very elusive.

We talk to ourselves all day long. Our mind is constantly in motion and the conversation going on between our ears is often quite lively.

Unfortunately, the context of this internal dialogue is usually more negative than positive. In truth, 90% of the time you are probably bad-mouthing yourself.

It confuses me when I hear that Olympic Athletes and professionals in golf, football, baseball, and basketball allow their belief system to falter at times. For any one of a hundred reasons, they too lose confidence in their ability to perform. Perhaps they are forgetting how good they are and begin listening to the crowd or reading what others think in the press.

I am not certified to psychoanalyze you, so I will steer away from going too deep into this abyss. I will remind you, however, that you did not get this far by accident. In most cases your successes have been earned. You have paid your dues. You have nothing but good intentions, and you are about to perform yet another service that will be appreciated by your customer. As I often remind my clients who find themselves in a funk now and then, “Keep on keeping on.” (That will be $125.00. LOL)

You must believe that you are the solution to your client’s problems. If you don’t, why should your client justify your contributions?  Begin today by envisioning the good in all you do. This is called visual internalization. First you see it in your mind. Then you believe you can achieve it. Then you do it.

My words are cheap. Confidence is a powerful feeling and a delicate balance between skill and mental interpretation. The best way to strengthen your confidence is with positive outcomes, small wins, and consistent positive self-talk.

You are good at what you do. Your contributions are valuable. You are a hard working honest person. Now go keep on keeping on. (No charge.)
