Surf Along the Coast of the Margaret River Region with Down Under Answers

Margaret River is one of Australia’s most lush and fertile winelands. This region in Australia’s west country is still relatively quiet in the tourist circles, which has led to the continued preservation of the area’s many natural features and draws. Among these are the stellar surfing coves, smaller Australian towns full of charm and vigor, and the natural wonders that have developed for thousands, if not millions, of years.

  • Margaret River is named after the cousin of John Garrett Bussel, the founder of the town of Busselton, who was named Margaret Whicher. European migrants from other parts of Australia settled in the area as early as 1850 and created a logging industry. In the 1920’s, the Government of Western Australia created new farms in order to entice even more people to settle in the region.
  • The Margaret River region has a fairly humid Mediterranean, typical for its position on the map near the Indian Ocean. The lush landscape is in part thanks to its heavier rainfall, with the area averaging 44 inches during the year. The wettest months tend to be in May and August, but there are plenty of warm, sunny days with a hint of a sea breeze. The summers tend to be much drier, and bush fires are a real concern.
  • The Margaret River is renowned as a premium wine region in Australia. The first commercial vineyard planting in the region was in 1967, and since then, the Margaret River has flourished. The region produces over 15% of Australia’s premium wines, with over 120 wine producers specializing in cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, Semillon, sauvignon blanc, merlot and shiraz wines.
  • Whether a novice or a pro, Margaret River has plenty of surfing spots to hang ten. The region has over 75 different surfing breaks spread over 80 miles of Australian coast. Each break has its own name and difficulty level, with the most challenging being Cowaramup Bombora, which produces some of the biggest waves in Australia.
  • Drawing in visitors every year, the town of Busselton wears its Australian hospitality with pride. The main event is the Busselton Jetty, a pier measuring over 1-mile-long which leads to the city’s Underground Observatory. The town is a favorite with families and children, with plenty of beaches, swimming, and petting zoos. Nature lovers can also charter a boat to watch the whales from September to December when they come close to the coast.
  • The Margaret River Gourmet Escape is held annually in November and showcases fine wines, great beer, celebrity chefs (Nigella Lawson will be there in 2016) and amazing food.
