White Sand Travel – the hurricane blues

October has started off with Matthew showing his wrath among travelers.

So far, in 2016 hurricanes have hit our Caribbean travelers with a vengeance. Hurricane season is really proving to be a challenge this year. Our clients have called with many questions and concerns regarding hurricane season, especially those trying to plan their vacations for 2017.

Well, we are not forecasters or seers, so we just give them the facts from our script…

The official hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin (the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico) is from 1 June to 30 November. The peak of the season is from mid-August to late October. However, deadly hurricanes can occur anytime in the hurricane season. As we have seen, not just hurricanes, but tropical storms have also been a factor. These dates are no guarantee and we saw a hurricane that hit in early February this year. What’s a traveler to do, how’s a traveler to plan? That leads to this question… When is the best time to travel?

Caribbean beaches are relatively pleasant throughout the year, so there are plenty of other times to consider visiting. However, traveling between March and November has its own disadvantages. While prices are significantly lower and crowds are much thinner, there are also fewer services available than during the peak season. Hotels, attractions, and even transportation can be more limited than the rest of the year. If you prefer to have as many options as possible, avoid the off season.

The best time to go to the Caribbean mostly comes down to avoiding the worst times. To skip the tourist season and the worst of the hot and rainy weather, plan a trip for spring or fall. November may be the best choice for most travelers, since you can avoid spring break crowds and get away from late fall weather at home, while still beating the winter rush.

There are some things we suggest for travel during hurricane season:

  • Purchase Travel Insurance
  • Download weather apps
  • For Cruisers, consider the Pacific as opposed to the Atlantic
  • Be prepared to extend your trip in case the weather impacts it

Until next time…
