It’s Not How Good You Are: A Ship in Harbor is Not a Ship

“The person who doesn’t make mistakes is unlikely to make anything.”

It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be. by Paul Arden, page 50

As many of you know, this is one of my favorite topics. You can think of less-than-glowing results as mistakes, or you can consider them failures. Regardless of your word choice, some things just are not going to work out as you would have liked.

You know the drill by now. I bang out a few examples designed to make you feel good. I tell you how a famous playwright failed to acquire backing from more than 35 banks before finding the funding needed. Or how Michael Jordan was cut from his first basketball team, or how many times Babe Ruth struck out.

You have heard them all so I won’t use any more ink boring you to tears. But here is the truth: Life is a sine wave that follows a pattern that refuses to be altered. You will fail. You will make mistakes. You will get bummed out, and you will want to quit on more than one occasion. But you will also win, laugh, jump for joy, and count your money.

The good news is, albeit a tad sad, there is a way to avoid much of the pain that accompanies mistakes and failure. Don’t do anything. Sit back and watch the world turn. Bide your time on earth and find reason to blame and excuse your way until your particular judgment day. Turn your curvy sine wave into a flat line. Go ahead. If this is what you want to do, you will not be hurting me.

But as a famous sailor once went on record to say, “A ship in a harbor is safe, but that is not what ships were made for.” And so it goes with you. You can choose to take the “safe” route if that is what floats your boat. But I personally don’t believe that is the most enjoyable way to spend the rest of your life.

Here is my attempt to get you back in the game and prepared to swing and miss as many times as it takes. Get ready. This might sting:

“NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU.”

There, I said it. Nobody cares about you, so you no longer have to worry about what other people think. You care about you, and that is all you need to determine what steps need to be taken to get to where you want to go.

Here is another eye-opener if you are ready for it: The more you fail, the more successful you will become. The more mistakes you make, the faster you will learn what works.

So, if this is not something for you to consider moving forward, I don’t know what else I can offer. Fail faster.
