Go Buy a Motorcycle

The word “regret” has very little room in your future vocabulary. What you don’t want, and can’t afford, is to look back on the year 2016 and utter the useless phrase, ”If only I had…”

Good, bad or indifferent, everything that happened in 2016 has fast become yesterday’s news. Granted, you probably learned something from each mistake you made (hopefully) and you took a bow or two for your success stories. Good for you, in both instances.

Yesterday is a memory and tomorrow remains a dream. Today is your true reality. What can you do today to make a difference in the lives of your clients and prospects? That is the only question worth asking as you enter this New Year. What difference can I make? Make your answer meaningful so tomorrow when you look back at today, you can be proud of what you recall.

I’m reminded of a TV commercial that depicted a grandfather surrounded by three young children. He’s holding a toy Harley-Davidson motorcycle telling his grandchildren about the good old days and how he was planning to buy a motorcycle and ride off into the sunset on two wheels with grandma on the back. The kids listened, mesmerized.

One of the kids asked Gramps if he owned a Harley Davidson. With remorse in his voice, the grandfather sheepishly replied that he invested in aluminum siding instead. The kids immediately retreated to seek out more exciting stories from grandma. Grandpa looked disheartened.

I have nothing against aluminum siding, but the lesson here is clear. Eliminate should have’s, would have’s, and could have’s, and focus on those accomplishments that actually came to pass.

This year make up your mind to make decisions that will add life to your resume, put the bounce back in your step, and make your grandchildren think you are really cool and fun to be around. Go ahead. Stick your neck out a bit and live life a little larger than usual.
