60-Second Geography

Croatia

1
  • Croatia is bordered by Slovenia, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina and is in close proximity to Austria and Italy. Zagreb is the capital, and the interior of the country is mountainous and filled with excellent hiking and gorgeous scenery. Likewise, Croatia’s Dalmatia coast along the Adriatic is dotted by more than 1,000 islands. Travelers who have explored much of Europe will take delight in getting just a bit off the tourist track with spectacular opportunities to explore a new part of the continent.
  • Dubrovnik is a medieval walled city with an ancient history dating back to the 7th Century, though the first walls were built in the 9th Century and were later fortified with 15 massive forts to defend against invading Turks. From the top of Mount Srdj, accessible by cable car, you can get an excellent view of the city and of the mountains of Herzegovina. On the coast, you can find seaside konobas, swim-up taverns where patrons swim while the staff prepares their meal. Just off the coast a ferry ride away is the forested island of Lokrum, a popular swimming spot. A medieval Benedictine monastery on Lokrum now serves as a museum. Also be sure to see the Sponza Palace, a 16th century edifice now housing the State Archives.
  • The capital city of Zagreb provides the traveler with a terrific mix of culture, arts, gastronomy and music. The small city’s cafes and bars cater to locals and tourists alike and during the warm summer months Jarun Lake gathers sun worshipers, swimmers and a youthful crowd at its many lakeside taverns and discos. The city hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art and the medieval fortress of Medvedgrad, dating from the 13th Century, which during July becomes a music venue at night. The city’s active fruit and vegetable market draws farmers, florists and artisans from across the country with stalls filled with local produce.
  • The lovely town of Split is Croatia’s second largest city. The Diocletian’s Palace is a Roman era structure still in use today at the center of the city and houses bars, restaurants and shops. The basement of the palace is an active passageway, and is also the set location of several scenes from Game of Thrones. The mountains and the Adriatic come together in Split to form a uniquely Croatian landscape. Like all of Croatia, Split is a great value having excellent accommodation and dining options at very affordable prices.
  • The outdoor recreation options in Croatia seem endless. More than 10% of the country is protected from development. Croatia’s beaches and national parks are some of the finest in the world. The Adriatic is crystal clear and the picturesque beaches abundant. There are eight national parks with amazing lakes and waterfalls. The Biokovo Mountain range offers excellent vistas and hiking. The hilly interior vineyards produce a red Teran wine. The Dalmation coast is dotted with excellent dining options and stunning pebble beaches.
