The Mississippi River

  • The Mississippi River is one of the world’s major significant river systems in size and biological diversity. It is the second longest river in North America, flowing approximately 2,350 miles from its source at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota through the center of the continental United States to New Orleans and into the Gulf of Mexico.
  • New Orleans, also referred to as the “Big Easy,” is a Louisiana city on the Mississippi River, near the Gulf of Mexico. Known as the birthplace of Jazz, New Orleans has vibrant live-music scene and spicy cuisine reflecting its history as a melting pot of French, African, and American cultures.
  • Oak Alley Plantation is National Historic Landmark set along the lower Mississippi River. In 1830, Valcour Aime, one of the South’s richest men, purchased this Greek Revival plantation house and land to grow sugarcane. The plantation’s historic grounds include a blacksmith shop, a garden, and grand garage where antique cars are on view.
  • The city of Vicksburg served as a pivotal turning point during the American Civil War. Vicksburg’s battlefields, monuments, and museums echo the stories of this defining time in American History. The city’s National Military Park commemorates the campaign, siege, and defense of Vicksburg with a restored ironclad gunboat, U.S.S Cairo; the battlefield where the Siege of Vicksburg took place, and the over 1,300 monuments dedicated to the brave souls who lost their lives.
  • Memphis is a city on the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee, with a deep-rooted history which spans many of the most important aspects of American culture. Memphis is home to the Blues, BBQ, Beale Street, and Rock-n-Roll. Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Johnny Cash recorded albums at the city’s legendary Sun Studio, and Presley’s Graceland mansion is also a popular tourist destination.
  • The dramatic landscapes of the Upper Mississippi River have long inspired artists, writers, and steamboat passengers. It was here that literary great Mark Twain used the majestic river and its scenic bluffs as the settings of his most popular works. His boyhood home of Hannibal is where the idea for the characters of Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Becky Thatcher originated.
  • Red Wing is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota, along the upper Mississippi River.  Nestled among the river’s scenic bluffs, Red Wing’s beauty has inspired artisans, craftspeople, and artists for over 150 years.  Historically, Red Wing is known for its shoes, pottery and linseed oil, but today it has become a leading producer of robotic components
