When Was The Last Time You Got Jammed Up?

This phrase hit me like a ton of bricks as I was watching the TV show Blue Bloods.

The detective (the commissioner’s son) made a decision that he knew was a step or two “out of bounds.” When he was called into explain himself, life became very uncomfortable for the detective. He knew what was coming. He braced himself for an unpleasant tongue-lashing. The “s*(&” was about to hit the fan.

When his partner asked about the dress down, he instantly replied by saying, “I got jammed up.” But then something very noticeable happened.

This guy got back to work without sharing his rationale or a slew of excuses. Sure, he might have regretted his decision after playing Monday Morning Quarterback and giving it some additional thought, but he wasn’t going to let a single decision ruin his day, week, month, year or career. He wasn’t heading off to the Brooklyn Bridge to showcase his own personal rendition of the “Flying Wallenda” move. He kept moving forward. He got back to his business.

So he got “jammed up.” Big deal. Join the club.

Every time I see, hear, experience or witness a lesson like this in action, I think of my fellow travel associates. Let me see if I can net this lesson out for you:

  1. You will make knee-jerk decisions at times. Some outcomes will prove to be better than others. Life will continue. You will go on. The beat will go on.
  2. If you are not getting “jammed up” now and then, perhaps you’re not stepping out of your comfort zone. In the vast majority of cases getting “jammed up” won’t kill you. In fact, it just might help accelerate your learning curve. (It certainly will take the boring out of your life.)
  3. It is easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission. (You didn’t hear that from me, but this simple understanding has helped me get through the last 60 years unscathed.)
  4. Some days you will resemble a bug. Some days you will serve as the windshield. Just don’t get too comfortable being the bug.

So I ask you this: “When was the last time you got jammed up?” If you can’t remember, that it just might be a good time to do something about it.

My suggestion: (1) Get up. (2) Get out. And (3) get jammed up.
