Tip #14: Be First. Speed Wins

This is Tip #14 from my Special Report written for recent high school graduates. It is also relevant to most adults. (Make that all adults.)

“Speed Wins” is a good motto for you, and it should not take too long to commit to memory. Before I give you my thoughts on “speed,” I would like to acknowledge this motto’s counterpoint, which reminds us in no uncertain terms “Haste makes waste.” I’ll accept your point of view and come right back with my response being “He who hesitates is lost.” Your move!

In my experience, he or she who responds the quickest to opportunities as they present themselves is given the edge more often than not.

You can refer to this as “accelerating through the window of opportunity.” This window doesn’t stay open for very long. You must respond and act accordingly “when the iron is hot.”

The majority of humans have the tendency to procrastinate. They put off what is not immediately convenient. I understand this, and at times, I find myself delaying my activity until I feel it is a bit more convenient…for me…to do so. (I too forget at times that it is not about me, and that opportunities are fleeting.)

Think about it. The person who is introducing you to the opportunity wants to get on with the project. Any delay or inactivity only increases the forecasted completion time. We are living in a “now or sooner” world. The choice is yours.

Play to these rules and increase your chances of success by responding quickly. Answer the phone. Write the letter. Reply to the email. Arrive at a solution. Schedule the appointment. Or, you can play by procrastination’s rules and decide to wait until it is convenient for you to respond, thereby hurting your chances to benefit.

I am not suggesting that you become impetuous flying through life by the seat of your pants and totally living by other people’s rules. I am suggesting that if you do your due diligence and act quickly, your chances for success will be enhanced.

The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.”
