Tip #19: Read Like Your Future Depends On It

This is Tip #19 from my Special Report written for recent high school graduates. It is also relevant to most adults. (Make that all adults.)

When I ask young people to “read,” I feel like I’m asking them to sit down and prepare themselves for a root canal. Who or what is to blame? TV? Video Games? Computer Screens? Smart Phones? Poor Eyesight? Who cares?

The fact that you are reading Tip #19 should put an end to this feeling, but it doesn’t change my opinion in general. It simply implies that you are the exception.

You are a smart individual. My message to you is to read more starting today. Get into the habit of reading 10 to 30 minutes every morning. I really don’t care what your subject matter is; reading something about the field of business you are interested in makes good sense. At the very least, this will keep you away from the computer screen and/or the television set for a small chunk of time, which in and of itself is a good suggestion.

Get into the habit of reading about your “topic-of-interest” daily. Without stalking the aisles of Barnes and Noble, a quick way to master this is to call upon Google Alerts. (I am sure most high school graduates are familiar with Google Alerts. If not, go to www.google.com/alerts and take three minutes to familiarize yourself with one of the most practical tools on the Internet today.)

The funny thing about reading is that for you to benefit you don’t have to internalize the subject matter. Your mind will soon become stimulated on its own, and it will begin to conjure up all kinds of ideas, projects, and creative activities. That is okay. As long as you regularly stretch your imagination and/or add to your current knowledge base, you will be distancing yourself from the competition.

They say that you can become an unqualified expert in any new field by devoting just 10,000 hours to study. Do the math. At 20 minutes a day, you would become “THE guy or THE gal” in just 2000 days or less than six years.

“Carpe diem. Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary.”
