Tip #21: If You Say It Do It

This is Tip #21, and the final tip from my Special Report written for recent high school graduates. It is also relevant to most adults. (Make that all adults.)

“Talk is cheap.” No truer words have ever been spoken.

Most people have a tendency to tell people what they think they want to hear, regardless of what they are planning to do later. If you want to distance yourself from the rank-and-file, this is one of the easiest ways to do it. Do what you say you are going to do. If you are not going to do it, don’t say it. If you say it, do it.

Based on experience, if you can prove to others that you are a person of your word, life is going to unfold in a very comfortable fashion for you for the next fifty years.

In today’s world, it seems that a written contract and a court of law is the only way to support an agreement between two parties. This may continue to be the case, but there is still room for you to become the “exception” by telling people what is about to happen and then turning it into reality without calling on the services of Judge Judy.

A caveat to this message follows:

Whether you are going to class or to a job assignment, arrive early, stay late, and always deliver your assignments on time if not ahead of time. In other words, do more than people expect from a person in your position.

Don’t just “tell” people what you are going to do. “Show” them what you can do.
