Ranking third among the most populous urban areas in South Africa, Durban is a hub of excitement and activities for residents and visitors alike. One of the most popular and historic ways to spend an afternoon in Durban is exploring the Durban Botanic Gardens. It is both Durban’s oldest public institution and Africa’s oldest surviving botanical gardens; spanning 37 acres, Durban Botanic Gardens boasts an extensive collection of cycads both from South America and other parts of the world. Stroll through the gardens and gaze on the beautiful orchids and trees. If you are lucky, you can catch one of the events hosted at the gardens, like a Victorian Tea Party or a live band.

uShaka Marine World is another unique offering for a fun filled day in Durban. A 40 acre theme park compromised of 5 different sections, uShaka Marine World contains the fifth largest aquarium in the world as well a water park, beach, and village walk shopping center. Starting from uShaka beach is the Golden Mile: a popular stretch of beachfront ideal for any sunbather. Golden sand, endless piers, and year round lifeguard protection make the Golden Mile the best beach destination. It also contains many hotels and condos, as well as attractions like Mini Town which is a miniature replica of Durban and even includes a working mini airport and railway!

Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World is also found along the Golden Mile, which includes a semi-private beach, shops, and restaurants. Many popular surfing spots, like Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach are found here too. The Surfing Museum, a historical site detailing the surfing history in Durban, is in the area as well; you can see the surf on the beach and then learn its history in the museum! Explore an array of nature preserves like North Park Nature Reserve or New Germany Nature Reserve if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle.
