Don’t Wait For Your “Personal” Wake-Up Call

I was reminded recently that life does not always play by the rules. I am not looking for sympathy. I am well beyond that point. I simply want to remind you that life does not always play by the rules.

As an ex-athlete, Ironman Triathlete and in general, a guy who has his weight under control and eats the right foods more often than not, I was the recipient of the “wake-up call.”

My wife, Barbara was away for the week-end with her high school girlfriends, which left me to fend for myself at home. On Saturday morning, without warning, I found myself on the floor experiencing what I would describe as “excruciating pain.” It came unannounced. It did not go away. It was in the area of my lower back. I was exhibiting that friendly term known as “back-spasms.”

For those of you in the know, this isn’t a laughing matter. Especially when you are home alone. For those of you who have not had the pleasure, it feels like you have just been tasered with 5000 volts in one of the most sensitive areas of your body…the lower back.

Back spasms are paralyzing (Temporarily). Not to bore you with the specifics, but I finally found a relaxing position laying motionless on my back staring at the ceiling…for the next 10 hours (I know, Marchev must be a wimp). I managed to down a few crackers later on in the day, and went to bed early hoping Sunday had a more pleasant surprise waiting for me. It did. On Sunday I was back in the game.

Today’s message is simple. We are all one-step away from some debilitating encounter. Maybe it will be your fault, maybe it won’t be. But the fact remains, regardless of who you are, your whack-in-the-head is just a Saturday away…or Thursday….or Monday.

I got the message loud and clear. More stretching. More water. Less heavy lifting.

Growing older comes with a new set of rules. Count on it. Plan on it. Do something about it….today. If Saturday’s incident struck while I was on stage, behind the wheel of my car, or at an airport, I might not be writing this reminder to you today. I dodged the bullet even though that particular Saturday was one for the books.

Be smart. Read this message again. Believe that your body is not getting any younger, and then make the appropriate adjustments. It doesn’t have to be that hard. Just be smart.

Take care of yourself. You really are all you’ve got.
