Validation: Who Needs It?

In this morning’s paper I read an article that sounded like I was talking. Some well-known public speaker was being quoted. To me, it sounded like he was reading from my book. (I love it when that happens.)

When this occurs, I find myself validating what I share with my audiences. It more or less confirms my message as being on track and on target. When I hear others sharing the same information I share it re-energizes me. This is both important and beneficial.

The same holds true for those attending my live programs. Participants often find themselves learning something new, but more often they hear that much of what they are doing is acceptable and represents sound marketing principles.

So who needs validation? Answer. Everybody.

You do. I do. He, she and they do. Everybody needs to be validated in some way, shape or form. As humans, we need to know that what we are doing has meaning and is appreciated. We need to hear applause, which is a clear sign that we are on the right track. This is not optional, it is a necessity.

So when you are not being validated this week, take the opportunity to validate somebody in your life. “Somebody” in this case includes your employees, your managers, your wife, husband, kids, neighbors, mailman, dentist etc.

Let people know they are doing good work, and what they are doing is appreciated. In other words, find reasons to applaud people this week. Become a “Validator.” You’ll love the feeling, and you will benefit from this big-league move.

That’s it for today. Short. Sweet. Simple. You know what’s coming next. Get out there and start validating.
