  • Located in Northern Europe is the cultural and historical region of Scandinavia. Scandinavia includes the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and with the many beautiful places to explore and activities to partake in there is no shortage of adventure. One of the most famous attractions Scandinavia has to offer is Preikestolen, located in Norway. A steep cliff that rises over 1,900 ft. Preikestolen is popular among base jumpers. One of its most unique qualities is its almost completely flat top of roughly 82 x 82 ft. The cliff sits across from Kjerag Plateau, and offers some of the most breathtaking views from its peak. The site is only accessible by a small, 2.4 mile hiking path that has recently been renovated due to the popularity of the site. Weather conditions can make the trek to the top of Preikestolen rather lengthy, and the best recommended time for a visit is during the summer months. The plateau is believed to have been formed over 10,000 years prior during the ice age, and although cracked it is still completely secure. Being able to stand on such an old piece of geographical history and take in the views around you makes Preikestolen something not to be missed on a visit to Scandinavia. Lofoten is an archipelago also located in Norway known for its particular scenery, including distinctive mountains and peaks, untouched lands, and open sea. It is one of the ultimate locations for nature lovers on a trip to Scandinavia, as it offers many activities like biking, rock climbing, kayaking, and fishing. The landscape in the area is so diverse you can even go skiing and ocean rafting too! From September to mid April you can even see the Northern Lights, one of the most incredible sights to see in life.

  • If all your hiking and adventuring outdoors in Lofoten has you tired, take a break from the wilderness and check out the Lofotr Viking Museum. Based on the reconstruction and excavation of a Viking chieftain’s village, this historical museum includes not only a full reconstruction of the near 300 ft. long chieftain’s house, but also two ships and their boathouses and a blacksmith. Reenactments take place for visitors to fully immerse themselves into the past of this viking village, and learn about the history of the lands they are visiting. Exhibition halls found in the newer buildings of the museum house artifacts and other findings from the excavation. A visit to the Lofotr Viking Museum will take visitors back to a different time, and show a different side of what Scandinavia consists of. Another unique museum in Scandinavia worth a visit is Skansen, or “The Sconce.” The first open air museum in Sweden, Skansen spans 75 acres of exhibit space and its purpose is to show the ways of life in Sweden before the industrial age. Some of the exhibits include a full replica of a 19th century town where craftsmen demonstrate their skills in full traditional dress. Not only do you get to see a pre-industrial town come to life before your eyes, but Skansen also houses an open air zoo containing many Scandinavian animals.

  • One of the highly sought-out sites located in the kingdom of Sweden in Scandinavia is Stockholm Palace. Also known as The Royal Palace, it is the official residence of the Swedish monarch as well as home to the offices of the King and other members of the Swedish Royal Family. The interior of this baroque palace has over 1,400 rooms and over 600 windows, and the property itself has 2 courtyards and over 200 employees! It is one of the largest palaces in Europe. The property also has multiple museums and a gift shop, as parts of it are open to the public. Spend an afternoon wandering through the exhibits in the museums, and be sure not to miss the changing of the guard! Sweden is also where you can find the Vasa Museum. This maritime museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship ever salvaged: the warship Vasa which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa Museum is said to be the most visited museum in Sweden, and belongs to the Swedish National Maritime Museums (along with the Stockholm Maritime Museum). The museum’s main hall contains the ship itself along with artifacts and archeological findings on the ships and of Sweden in the 17th century. Moored in the harbor outside of the Vasa Museum are four more ships to see. The Vasa Museum is any ship-lovers dream, and an educational and intriguing way to spend an afternoon passing through Sweden on your Scandinavian vacation.

  • Scandinavia is known for its elaborate history and culture, sure to enrich anyone who spends time to visit throughout the region. Bryggen, located in Norway, is one of the most interesting due to its architectural heritage. Bryggen, also known as Tyskebryggen, is a collection of Hanseatic commercial buildings and can be found on the UNESCO list for World Culture Heritage sites. In its prime, it was the centre of the Hanseatic commercial activities in Norway. Now, it is home to restaurants, pubs, and shops. While visiting the eclectic yet stunning buildings in Norway you can learn a little more about the history of the historic district by checking out the Bryggens Museum which highlights the ways of life in the medieval period through exhibits and artifacts discovered during the excavation of the site of a fire. If you are looking for a break from all the historical overload, take the family to Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park. It is Norway’s most visited attraction and is sure to delight everyone on your Scandinavian getaway. See an array of animals, including wolves, lynxes, tigers, and zebras while exploring the different areas of the amusement park like the recently added Captain Sabertooth World.

  • If you are looking for both an amusement park and historical significance in Scandinavia, look no further than Tivoli Gardens. Located in Denmark, Tivoli Gardens is the second oldest operating amusement park in the world, having opened in 1843. It is also the second most visited seasonal amusement park in the world, having drawn over 4 million visitors last year. In its beginnings Tivoli Gardens always had a different take on amusement, creating attractions of all different style and significance. This charm has carried through its many years to present day, and can be found all over the park. Flower gardens, rides, and even an Orient themed area can be found in the park. For the real thrill seekers, take a ride on the Rutschebanen: one of the world’s oldest wooden coasters still in operation today, as it is over 100 years old! Tivoli Gardens is also home to a few other coasters, as well as exhibit halls and attractions, cafes, and sound stages. If you are looking for a night on the town, visiting Nyhavn is the way to go. A waterfront entertainment district in Copenhagen that dates back to the 17th century, Nyhavn is full of bars, cafes, and restaurants with something to offer everyone. The hospitality in Scandinavia is incredible, and in Nyhavn it is no different. Spend a relaxed night at Nebbiolo Wine Bar enjoying a nice glass of wine and gazing out onto the canal. For something more laid back grab a beer at Charlie’s Bar, a pub-style establishment. For a unique craft cocktail stop by 1105, one of the popular cocktail bars in the area.

While in Scandinavia, travelers can first-handedly experience hygge, a Danish term defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being” as well as fika, the Swedish tradition that encourages locals and visitors alike to pause and reset. Thanks to Holidays with Downtown, this reset in Scandinavia can be a dream come true!
