Is Your “Bobcat” Dancing

I love to watch professionals do their thing.

I once hired a man to dig a hole in my backyard. I was going to do it myself, but thought better of the idea. I was going to install an above ground pool and I was ready to begin excavating. He arrived right on time, pulling a trailer behind his pick-up truck loaded with his machinery. This mini-bulldozer was called a “Bobcat,” and boy could he make that thing “sing.”

A Bobcat is a hole-digging device on four wheels. Within minutes of arriving, he was bobbing and weaving while a perfectly smooth and level hole was being introduced to my backyard.

This (conservatively) would have taken me at least two weeks to dig, accompanied with a whole bunch of back pain. The first day would have been spent staring at the spot where I was going to dig. The next twelve days would be for digging and swearing, with the last day spent fixing the damage I had done in the previous twelve.

As I watched him work his magic, I thought of what professionalism really looked like. This guy not only knew what he was doing, but he probably performed his work better than 99% of the people in his business. He was good. And he was fun to watch.

Do you really know what you are doing? Better than anyone else? Are you fun to watch? Can you save your clients time, pain, (and stress) by plying your trade with skill and dexterity? Do people stop and gawk at you while you are performing your skills? Do people want to pay you extra for a job well done?

With time, patience, trial and error and some self-induced doubt, most people can probably do what you do for a living. The question is can they do it as good as you? As fast as you? As thorough as you? As skillful as you can do it?

Can you make your Bobcat dance? Are you making your Bobcat dance?

I marveled at the way this man worked. He was good and in addition to gladly paying his invoice, I “duked” him an extra couple of bucks as my way of saying, “Thanks for the show.”

Make it your business to work your magic in whatever it is you do. Strive toward making your clients marvel at your skills, and the way you get the job done.

There are too many people in our (and all) industries who are simply taking up space. Don’t be one of them.

Be good at what you do. Know what you’re doing. Make it your business to get out there and make your Bobcat dance.
