A “New” Cruise Company: Saga Cruises

Have you every had that client request that was challenging to meet, or even impossible? They want a cruise, but they don’t want kids onboard or even younger adults, and they’re traveling solo. Adult only cruises haven’t been available outside of the charter market. We know Virgin Voyages will start sailing in 2020 with an adult only product. But they are not targeting a specific age range, other than adult.  Then, along comes Saga Cruises.

We can’t really call them a “new” cruise line because Saga Cruises has been operating for years in the UK, but they are a new product for US based travel agents. What makes Saga unique is that they are exclusively for the over 50 adults. They have also carved out a niche of catering to the 50+ solo traveler.

Their new ship build, Spirit of Discover, is relatively small compared to the cruise ships we are used to selling. At 55,900 tons, she has 10 decks with 540 all-balcony staterooms and 999 passengers. The Spirit of Discovery is billed as a boutique-style small ship experience that is “sophisticated, luxurious, and quintessentially British.” Some of the inclusions are five complimentary dining venues, complimentary wine with lunch and dinner, all onboard gratuities and service fees, complimentary Wi-Fi, and traditional British afternoon tea.

Of the 540 staterooms, 100 of them are dedicated to solo travelers. But they don’t simply provide solo accommodations. They offer exclusive onboard events and activities for their solo travelers, including Singles Mingles cocktail parties and lunches, and singles group shore excursion options.

Saga Cruises has over a dozen itineraries planned for the inaugural season of the Spirit of Discover starting in July 2019, ranging from a 4-night Channel Island Hop to an 21-night Italian Premiere itinerary, with a range of unique itineraries in-between. More information about their ships and itineraries can be found at www.sagacruises.com.
