  • Lisbon is the largest city in Portugal, as well as its capital. It is broken up into areas called Bairros de Lisboa (Neighborhoods of Lisbon). Each represents the growth of different subcultures and identifiable architectural landmarks. Alcantara sits on the Port of Lisbon, and is known for the clubs and bars housed in converted dock warehouses along the river. Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon, is filled with small squares and narrow streets. A prominent structure of Alfama is the Castle of Sao Jorge (Saint George Castle), a Moorish castle which provides the traveler with a great view of the city center and the Tagus River. The traveler can often find Fado, the traditional music of Portugal, playing in restaraunts around the district. Mouraria is the most multicultural bairro of Lisbon, and has the same narrow streets as Alfama. With over 60 nationalities from around the world living there, which means that there is never a dull moment for the traveler. Bairro Alto (Upper District) is a district where the traveler can find modern entertainment and music.

  • Porto is the second largest city in Portugal. Its historic centre was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are many sites to see in this historic city. The Ribeira, the oldest section of Porto, is a maze of narrow streets and ancient buildings. The colorful houses and lively socializing are great time. The traveler has many options when in Porto. Clėrigos Church and Tower is a perfect example of 18th century Baroque architecture. Constructed on the highest point of Porto, the traveler can climb the 294 ft-tall tower to get a phenomenal view of the city. Boat tours depart daily on the Douro River, which the traveler can view the terraced vineyards on the way to the town of Pinhão. At the heart of Porto, sits the plaza of Avenida dos Aliados. This is an area where locals get together to celebrate and meet up on nice days. The Igreja de São Francisco has Portugal’s most extravagant Baroque interiors. Though the outside may seem plain, the interior of this church is covered in gold leaf and will amaze the traveler with its shining and ornate interior.

  • Southwest of the mainland is the beautiful island of Madeira. Though not known for its beaches, it is a beautiful and mountainous island with the highest peak at 6,100 feet high. To the north of the island is São Vicente; here one can find pebble beaches, great surfing, and a beautiful 17th century church. One of the wildest, and traditional, events in Madeira is the Monte sledge. This is a wild ride on a wicker toboggan down a steep and curvy road. Another adventure in height is a hike up the Pico de Arieiro. This is an all-day adventure to where you’ll find the peaks above low clouds. You’ll also find a mountain top restaurant to kick back and enjoy the view.
