Big Ideas: The world’s most bogus excuse

My brother and I have a saying when it comes to our ever growing “to-do” lists, “It only takes two minutes.” This is another way of acknowledging the fact that nothing is hard once you get around to it. It is the getting around to it that seems to be impossible.

The term used from coast to coast and virtually around the globe sounds something like this: “There just isn’t enough time.”  It is the world’s most famous, well-worn, popular, weather-torn bogus, in your face excuse.

If you are ready for a life-changing message then keep reading. Everything, it seems, only takes a few minutes to accomplish yet the majority of these “little things” tend to hang on to our to-do lists for some time.

Now that I have your attention, I want you to hear this: GET OVER IT.

News Flash: You do have enough time. In fact, you have all the time there is to accomplish every single thing you want to accomplish. Your problem/crutch/predicament/cross to bear, is that you either just don’t admit, know, understand, or realize what really is important for you to accomplish. (Yes you CAN lose weight … if you WANT to.)

I’ll try to say this a little differently utilizing a little bit of my New Jersey, (born, bred and glad of it) attitude. You are casting blame in the wrong direction.  Time isn’t the problem. YOU’RE THE PROBLEM. Bada bing, bada bang, bada boom. (Don’t you just hate it when guys like me don’t play by the politically correct rules?)

Chances are, your time is largely consumed by ticking off your to-do list and feeling good about those ticks. Here’s the problem–you could live quite nicely if you ignored most of those ticks. Chances are you are avoiding the two or three things that should and need to get done each and every day if you were really serious about growing your business. Little things. Simple things. Logical things. No, I am not suggesting that you put your kids up on the auction block or cease volunteering at your church.

I am suggesting that you might be getting your jollies by ticking off the numbers in mass. So, you need an example of what you should be doing?

I have suggested that all Fridays from now on be known as Note Card Friday. Send just one note to somebody (anybody) who is important to you. In a recent webinar, how many people do you think  felt this was good advice? 100%! How many people do you think wrote one a single note last Friday? My guess (no one is going to admit it) would be 1%.And it does not sound like an exaggeration to me. Why didn’t they do it? Not enough time. Too busy ticking off items.

You want another example? How about starting each and every email with the recipient’s name instead of launching right into the message? It makes a world of difference when interpreting the tone of the written word. This is a major league good idea.

Why don’t more people do it after agreeing with me that it makes enormous sense? Yep. You guessed it. Not enough time. Those seven additional seconds to help position you as the consummate professional just can’t be squeezed into your daily operation. After all, you are too busy being busy to do anything that just might help launch you to the head of the competition line. And besides, it is too convenient to just blame it on the ‘time.”

Let’s keep this thing real. I know you have a full plate. I agree. I get it. Your plate is full. All I am asking is that you drop the lame excuses and call it like it really is.

Now we are getting somewhere. It is all about priorities. If you do nothing else, please find some time (two minutes) in the next couple of days to review and re-juggle, if necessary, your priorities. You can’t do everything and you can’t be all things to all people. STOP trying. Do only what needs doing.

And one more thing–drop the time excuse thing from your vocabulary. We are all getting sick and tired of hearing it. “Priorities” is your new battle cry. Also, try using the word “no” from time to time.

PS. A special shout out to Bob (my clients still call me Robert) Joselyn for urging me to stay in the industry. He also implied that with me staying in the business it would make him and his associate Bruce Tepper look better. That was nearly 15 years ago. My pleasure!

If you are still reading this, get ready. Your life is about to take a turn for the better.
