Education should be a life-long experience

Knowledge is vital in today’s business world. If I asked you, “what new things are you going to learn this year?”, what would be your answer? Do you even have an answer? Many times that is the challenge. We want to learn but are not sure what it is we want to learn. Now is a good time to make that list.

Your list can include business, physical, economic, personal, spiritual, and more options. I just watched the movie “The Bucket List” again and was reminded of how people wait until time seems limited to make a list of things to do, learn, and experience.

Don’t wait. Make learning a life-long goal. No matter what area you decide to educate yourself in, other areas of your life will be affected. Two years ago I became an Apple fan and bought my first Macbook. I decided to take advantage of the Apple One-to-One personal classes for one year. This made such a difference in how I understand and use my Mac for business and personal use. It also reminded me of what it felt like to be a student.

Where do you need to grow in your business? What do you want to learn that will enhance your business? Today, the opportunities are easy and affordable—if not free! You can start with books, online courses, webinars, conferences, conventions, mentors, or you can go back to college or get coaching from a professional. There really is no excuse.

Look around and see what opportunities are close at hand to become more educated in your business. It is a process of being a life-long learner. I do want to mention that being a life-long learner does not mean being a life-long student.

Even students graduate and apply what they learn. This applies to you as well.  Continue to learn, grow, experience but don’t forget the step called application.

It is like learning to scuba dive in a swimming pool and never going into the ocean.  The whole idea of education is to put your feet on the shore and apply what you have learned.

I repeat my first question, “what new things are going to learn this year?” and I hope that you now have some exciting items to add to your list.

  1. Larry Norman CTC, MCC says:

    Keith,
I couldn’t agree with you more, but you already know that we share the same enjoyment from helping agents with their lifetime education plan.

Our industry continues to change and with it, agents need to understand the importance of “changing with the changes” and in many cases it takes learning new skill sets.

I attended an all day Motivational Seminar yesterday, which had some great speakers. But, it all boiled down to the same thing we all know, that if we want to change our life and the results we get, we have to first change ourselves and how we prioritize our days, weeks, months and life.

As I for one, want to accomplish all the things on my bucket list.

    Thanks for reminder.
