India’s cultural tradition dates back to 8000 BC and has a continuously recorded history for over 2,500 years. With its roots based in the Indus Valley Tradition, the Indian culture took a distinctive shape during the 11th century BC which laid the foundation of Hindu philosophy, mythology, literary tradition and beliefs and practices, such as dhárma, kárma, yóga and mokṣa. It has managed to preserve established traditions while absorbing new customs, traditions, and ideas from invaders and immigrants and spreading its cultural influence to other parts of Asia, mainly South East and East Asia. 

Indian architecture is one area that represents the diversity of Indian culture. Much of it, including notable monuments such as the Taj Mahal and other examples of Mughal architecture and South Indian architecture, comprises a blend of ancient and varied local traditions from several parts of the country and abroad.

India is one of the largest countries in the world and worthy of exploration. Here are three major tourist areas worth spending some time. 

  • Delhi, is the political capital of India and it is perhaps the major tourist attraction, bearing a rich and heavy cultural and historical past. Located on the banks of the Yamuna, this city presents some of the best tourist destinations including, Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Qutab Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Purana Qila, Laxminarayan Temple, Akshardham, and the Bahai Lotus Temple. The Taj Mahal is in Agra, approximately 120 miles to the south of Delhi.
  • Mumbai is another of the tourist centers of India, which exudes glitz, glamour, glitter and gold. Set along the Arabian Sea, you will find the Gateway of India, Elephanta Caves, Nariman Point, Chowpatty Beach, Juhu Beach, and Marine Drive. Stopping for a bite to eat at the roadside stands is a must for any visitor. Some of the specialties include, vada pav, panipuri, paav bhaji, and bhelpuri.
  • Kolkata is another large tourist draw in India. The city exudes a character of culture, education and warmth. It is often referred to as the City of Joy. Within Kolkata you will find the Victoria Memorial, the Indian Museum, National Library of India, and the Academy of Fine Arts. Durga Puja and Kali Puja are the two major festivals of this Kolkata and the rosogollas and mishti doi are some of the most irresistible delicacies of this city.
