Galavant Travel — Spinning my wheels

As I sit in my local Borders bookstore sipping coffee, working and enjoying the scenery, I find myself pondering this month’s topic. I first would like to say, I’m so in love with being able to take my office with me wherever I go.  It helps fight the loneliness and isolation of working at home in a small town.

I tried to think of something witty, profound, and philosophical to write, but all I’ve managed to come up with is what I posted on Facebook last night, which was…spinning my wheels. I was frustrated at my lack of travel bookings this month, bemoaning the fact that I had a fabulous June sales month, and then…nothing…zero…zip…nada! I have taken time to reflect on why my sales are down. I do understand the ebbs and flow of the travel industry, and was reminded once again that July is historically a very slow month for me, and this July is no different.

I’ve taken off weekends this month, where usually I work one day each weekend. I also know that summers in New Hampshire are very short; and I’m taking advantage by attending cookouts, outings, exploring my local tourist areas, and enjoying the company of friends and family.

I’ve also taken advantage of this slow time to attend sales trainings, supplier webinars and planned my training conferences for the rest of the year. I’ve also ramped up my business marketing. While I am not seeing too many bookings, I am seeing a lot more interest, which makes me excited and happy. I’ve had my nose to the grindstone trying to build my business for so long, that sometimes I forget to relax when it’s quiet.

I have never been good with the slow periods in travel, and get easily frustrated.  However, I’m slowly learning I need to stop and enjoy the view, because I know I’ll be so busy later on I won’t have time to breathe.

It is the same with bookings for me. The first two weeks of July were unusually busy and now nothing. Always happens as no one really wants to leave Maine in the summer.
