The French Countryside

Wine tours are synonymous with trips to France. With a vacation through the countryside, there are more options than there could ever be time to see them all. Bordeaux, with its world-famous grapes that produce a popular variety of wine, is laden with vineyards just ready to be explored. The Loire Valley, set on the Loire River, has many sub-regions (including Nantes, Anjou, Touraine, Chinon, Bourgueil, and Valcay), each with its own unique offering of wineries to tour thanks to a range of climates and geological variations. Provence, located in the south of France, is full of fruit trees (such as apples, peaches, and pears) and fields of lavender. This makes for a lovely and varietal offering of non-traditional wines and the tours are sure to leave a lifelong impression.
  • Every region in France has its own offering of boutique inns, chateaus and castles. Guests can indulge in luxury accommodations while savoring the peaceful beauty of remote country settings. The Loire Valley, a refreshingly unspoiled region in the heart of the country, contains many castles that have been converted into hotels for guests from all over the world to live like royalty. Bordeaux and Cognac are full of charming chateaux and inns that allow less luxury with all the beauty of a castle.
  • French cuisine sets the standard for the culinary world and the restaurants throughout the countryside are not exempt from this distinction. Fertile soil, generous sunshine and ample rain provide all the right ingredients for growing olives, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, herbs and those cherished black diamonds, truffles. In the Provencial region Menton, France’s lemon capital, is the perfect place to be treated to a tangy tarte au citron while Marseille turns to the sea for saffron-infused bouillabaisse. In Normandy, the D-Day beaches are not the only tourist draw. Cuisine in this area is famous for its rich cream and butter sauces, use of apples (including apple Brandy and cider) and fresh shellfish and fish from the cool nearby waters.
  • For outdoorsy travelers, the French countryside is perfect for a wide variety of activities. Fly fishing, hunting, canoeing/kayaking, horseback riding or just taking a leisurely stroll through the beautiful landscape are all within a few steps of any chateau or inn.
  • During the colder months, the many ski resorts in the French allow travelers interested in any winter sports the opportunity to test their skills during the day and, of course, punctuate the outing with some great après ski drinks.
  • For a taste of some of France’s far-flung history, visitors can marvel at prehistoric cave art by taking a walking tour. The drawings at Lascaux in the Dordogne are the most famous.
