Last week, I was speaking to a group of business leaders and it hit me. A gentleman who was attending the evening reception said something that hit me squarely in the head. His five words made so much sense that I just knew I’d be stealing them to hopefully hit a few travel agents squarely in their heads. So what were these mysterious five words? Ready? Here you go…learn to drop the rock!
Huh? He was a very successful man. Full of life. Full of fun. Full of ideas. And, most important, full of solid business decisions. He was a man that instantly commanded respect. And for those that know me, being from Jersey and all, that is a hard pill to swallow. We were talking about why some people are more successful than others when dropped the bomb.
He said, “Most people are just too scared to drop the rock”.
The reason that many people are not more successful today is because they are holding onto self-imposed limitations … as if they are anchored to a huge rock for stability. They are burdened by what others may think and shackled by a bunch of negative “what -if” energy-sapping scenarios. Have you ever heard (or uttered) any of these?
- We can’t do that.
- We have never done that before.
- That is not the way we do things.
- Don’t be silly!
- What would people think?
- That isn’t me.
- Sounds like too much work.
- What if it doesn’t work?
- You’re kidding…right?
- That would never work.
If you are operating your business with those phrases, you might be successful. You will likely be a plain vanilla business. Predictable. Moderately successful. One of the gang. Or virtually invisible.
To follow the advice of an entrepreneur blindly is an invitation for flirting with disaster. But to listen to the advice and wisdom of a successful entrepreneur is something I recommend.
Show me a successful entrepreneur, and more often than not, I will show you a person who has “dropped the rock”.
Don’t be foolish. And don’t be too impetuous. But going forward in your business, focus on your own rocks. I bet you will find many if you look hard enough. Once identified, consider dropping them!
