Simply Europe Travel – Call me Ishmael

“Confidence is going after Moby Dick in a rowboat and taking the tartar sauce with you.”  — Zig Ziglar

I love this!  It made me so happy when I read, that I actually laughed out loud. I have a pretty vivid imagination, so this is how I imagine this scene playing out.

Captain Ahab in a tiny, leaky rowboat that is bobbing on large waves in the twilight. His crew is standing on large sturdy, relatively dry whaling vessel trying, in vain, to coax him back to safety.

Ahab is going to continue the hunt for Moby Dick on his own; his crew is no longer motivated to help him and he must leave them behind because they are hindering him.  They don’t feel what Captain Ahab feels, they don’t understand, it doesn’t make sense to them!

In my mind I can hear them standing on the deck yelling that Ahab is crazy and will never make it. They offer suggestions like waiting for calmer seas, or to try another day. And Ahab ignores each successive taunt.

Can you imagine it all unfolding in your mind?

Ahab is a man driven.  He has a goal, a passion, and it drives him!  He isn’t deterred by the current circumstances.  When the crew refused to go on with him, he found a way to set out on his own.  He gathers what he feels he needs to help him on his quest!  He turns to the cook and says, “Hey, bring me that tartar sauce I made earlier!  I left it in the galley!

Now that is confidence!  He is so sure he will get the whale that he has made preparations for when he does!

I envy Ahab.  He had a wonderful type freedom.  He planned for his goal and pre-determined exactly how far he would go in pursuit of the goal.  Here, he envisioned himself succeeding and even prepared as if it had already happened.

So what is your Moby Dick? Do you even have one?

We are now starting the last quarter of 2012 and we need to see where we are in our journey.  How much further do we have to go in order to achieve our current goals?  It’s also a great time to start working on your 2013 goals.

Are there any hard choices that we need to make to move forward?  Do we need to leave anything behind?  Do we need to re-evaluate, regroup or adjust course?

Set your resolve, find out what you need to make good choices, ignore the negative voices and grab your Tartar Sauce!

I’d love to hear what your plans are and what you’re doing.  As for me, I thing I’ll be heading on over to the library to pick up a copy of Moby Dick, and maybe enjoy a tuna sandwich for lunch!
