60-Second Geography

Israel

The modern State of Israel began in 1948 during the British post-war abandonment of Palestine. The United Nations partitioned the land, and after a series of conflicts the borders settled to what they are today, though there are still disputes.

  • One of the more popular destinations in Israel is Tel Aviv, the financial capital. Tel Aviv has the 2nd largest economy of any Middle Eastern city (behind Dubai) and an incredibly large number of attractions. Stop by any of the museums to engage in the rich history of Israel; drop into a local theater and catch anything from alternative-indie bands to Hebrew plays (for which interpretation is often available).
  • Israel is also home to one of the world’s oldest cities, Jerusalem. This holy city, is the spiritual center of the Jewish people, and home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Old City and Western wall.
  • This site is surrounded by Ottoman period walls and is the historical core of Jerusalem. The Old City plays host to millions of travelers a year, as it is home to many historical and religious sites
  • Within the walls of the Old City lay: the Temple Mount, Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Church of Holy Sepulchre.
  • Outside of this holy site and just to the north is Israel’s third largest city, Haifa, a seaport located on Israel’s Mediterranean shoreline below the scenic Mount Carmel.
  • While in Haifa, visit the most popular site in the Middle East, The Bahá’í Gardens. The terraced gardens rest on the norther slope of Mount Carmel, and is an absolute must-see!
  • Visitors can also explore Israel’s biggest archaeological sites, Caesarea National Park. Here, sightseers can tour the remains of Roman, Byzantine and Crusader cities
  • Israel has a plethora of attractions and activities for travelers including sensational beaches, a vibrant night life, and extraordinary historical sites!
