Priceless Cruising – Personal pressures bring character under question

Hi everyone! Hope your WAVE season has been productive! This month I’m addressing the importance of ‘character.’ I’m currently in the middle of two situations where my strength of character and reputation are on the line.

The first is a situation involves a family member, who erroneously thinks I have betrayed her. It sickens me to think that she even thinks I would have done this, but she’s so upset right now that she’s unable to listen to reason.

When I sense she is no longer angry, I will send her the letter I have written citing the differences in character between myself and the other person involved. If she can step away from her anger, she will see that she had overreacted and we can overcome this hurdle, but it still hurts to have had my character questioned.

The other is a business situation involving my membership with our local Chamber of Commerce. I have just applied to become one of this year’s Chamber Ambassadors. This program will enable me to contact fellow Chamber members and community leaders in a different capacity than if I was contacting them through Priceless Cruising. My goals are that I will be able to build a strong rapport with other Ambassadors and Chamber members, they will see my credibility and work ethic and, ultimately, I’ll hopefully be able to do business with them down the road.

The person in charge of the Ambassador program at the Chamber is a former co-worker of mine. I must admit that although I did not work directly with her; at the same time, I really didn’t go out of my way to ‘engage’ her either. I was, however, always professional and cordial and we had a mutual business respect for each other.

The good news is that she is keenly aware that I am a high energy, Type “A” personality, people person and that I have a good work ethic, I’m reliable and can meet deadlines (traits desirable for Chamber Ambassadors). I am confident that my past relationship with her will secure my acceptance into the Ambassador program.

In both situations, nothing I can say or do ‘today’ will matter – the outcome of both situations will completely depend on the strength of character I have already established with each of them over the course of time. I can only hope that my reputation and character are strong enough to withstand the scrutiny I am now under.

I’d like to end with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, “Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values and your values become your destiny.”
