The Czech Republic: The Land Of Stories

Prague: So Close To The Stars

Prague is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world; it’s also one of the most popular film locations in the Czech Republic. The most iconic is director Milos Forman’s eight-time Oscar-winning film Amadeus, in which Prague stood in for Vienna. You can experience the atmosphere of the movie Amadeus on your own and walk through the charming places in Prague where the movie was filmed. The film was shot in the Lesser Town, in the Archbishop’s and the Wallenstein Palaces, and at the Estates Theatre. The wedding in the film of Wolfgang Amadeus to Constance took place in the Church of St. Giles on Husova Street; and the scene of Mozart’s funeral, with his coffin carried out of the city under gloomy skies, we recognize as the Vysehrad’s Leopold Gateway. Many scenes of the movie were also filmed in the romantic setting of Kromeriz Manor in the UNESCO town of Kromeriz.

Cesky Krumlov: Living Fairy Tale

Located 3 hours south of Prague in South Bohemia is the UNESCO town of Cesky Krumlov, the residence of the aristocratic Rosenberg family. Rosenbergs, who wore a five-petal rose on their army coat, resided in the chateau for three centuries and transformed it into a spectacular Renaissance residence, which was meant to stand as an equal to the royal castle in Prague. Nowadays, you can still enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Cesky Krumlov Château, which houses the oldest Baroque theater in Europe. In the tour of the château you can learn about one of the most famous members of the family, Petr Wok von Rosenberg, who gathered a remarkable collection of art that rivaled that of Rudolph II at the Prague Castle. The Renaissance spirit is fully revived every year in June, when for three days the whole town comes alive with knightly tournaments, fencing matches, and lively craft fairs, culminating with a grand procession of historical figures and knights on horseback.

Plzen: Capital Of Beer And Culture

The West Bohemian city of Plzen, well-known throughout the world for its production of beer, will next year become a meeting point for the arts. Plzen, located just 1 jour from Prague by train, will be the European Capital of Culture in 2015, offering a rich cultural program including themes and stories associated with Plzen. The flagship programs feature a season of Le Cirque Nouveau, the exhibition of the Czech illustrator and puppet-maker Jiri Trnka and the 70th anniversary of liberation of Plzen by the U.S. troops during the WWII. Further, Plzen is also home of the famous Pilsen Urquell beer. Beyond the historic gates of the brewery you can take a tour of the factory and see how the world famous Pilsner Urquell or Gambrinus are made. You can even visit the local beer spa for a soak.

Mikulov: A Place Of Reconciliation

Located just 3.5 hours east of Prague, Mikulov is a charming town with rich a Jewish heritage that you should not miss on your journey through South Moravia. In the 16th century during the governance of the Liechtensteins, Mikulov became a place of religious refuge for an Anabaptist sect known as the Habans, and a few years later for the Jewish community. The town became the seat of the famous Rabbi Jehuda Löw, who according to legend was the creator of the mythical Golem of Prague. You can still visit the synagogue, the Jewish museum, and walk through the Jewish cemetery with 4,000 gravestones. Mikulov lies also in the center of the South Moravian wine region, offering an excellent variety of white wine. You can admire the craftsmanship and winemaking skills of the Habans at a winemaking exhibition at the châteaux, and taste the wines in nearby Haban cellars, which are the largest wine cellars in Moravia, built by members of the Anabaptist sect.
