Do you have a backup plan?

Back in 2010 my Mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and we made the decision, as a family, for hospice care. Between surgeries, hospital stays, and her passing, it was a grueling couple of weeks. While all this was going on, I attempted to take care of my current clients. I was in no shape to take on new ones at the time.

Fast-forward to last week—having kids exposes one to all kinds of nasty illnesses. My daughter was sick and I caught whatever was going around. For three days I lay in bed, too sick to move or to do much of anything other than answer emails.

This time around, I am lucky that I work for a brick and mortar agency and have back up. In 2010, I didn’t—and my business suffered.

How many of you working solo from home have back up if you get sick or if something major befalls you or a member of your family? No one likes to think of the unthinkable. But things do happen.

As a home-based business owner, it is crucial you have a backup plan in case something happens. If you work for a host agency or are considering switching hosts, you should be asking if they have a backup program and, specifically, what types of support it offers. If you are independent, consider partnering with another home-based agency owner who can help when you need it.

Finally, make sure you have a written plan. Make sure you have a file detailing who is traveling, payment deadlines, etc., that is easily accessible in case something does happen. Let your back up know where it is. Protect yourself and your clients.
