Tunisair: Taking Travelers to Tunisia and Beyond

Tunisia is Africa’s northernmost country, bordered by Algeria to the west and the Mediterranean Sea both to the north and northeast. This is a country steeped in Roman architecture, home to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, golden-sand beaches, and sunny weather.

Tunisair is the flag carrier airline of this proud land. The main base of operations for the airline is the Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN), named for the historic city of Carthage, a favorite destination for history lovers and architectural buffs.

On a more contemporary note, four of the Star Wars movies were filmed in southern Tunisia (representing the planet Tatooine in the movies) and due to the low humidity and desert climate, many of the original locations are still in relatively prime condition. You can inhabit Luke Skywalker’s home, which now functions as a hotel, and wander around the desert inspecting other Star Wars artifacts around the Mos Espa set.

Past to Present

Established in 1948, Tunisair has gone through several transformations. Starting with four Dakota (DC-3) aircraft purchased from the United States Army, it has transformed into a modern carrier. Tunisair flies to nearly 70 destinations spanning Africa, Middle East and Europe.

Tunisair’s fleet includes 29 state-of-the-art Boeing and Airbus aircraft: 16 Airbus A320, 2 Airbus A319, 2 Airbus A319 ER, 7 Boeing 737-600 in addition to the 2 new Airbus 330-200 (delivered in June and August 2015).

Looking to the Future

“I am extremely happy to welcome the A330-200 to our fleet, its unique profitability and unrivaled operating costs will allow us to develop our operations and win new market shares, thus supporting our country’s growth in the areas of tourism and economic development,” said Sara Rejeb, President and Chief Operating Officer of Tunisair, during a ceremony held at the Airbus Delivery Centre in Toulouse.

The newest addition to the Tunisair fleet will offer passengers the latest amenities, greater cabin comfort, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a state-of-the art in-flight entertainment system. Seating will accommodate 24 passengers in business class and 242 in economy class. Starting summer 2016, Tunisair will also be offering direct flights from Montreal to Tunis.
