The Pursuit of WOW!: Reading is the Key

“Study your butt off.”

The Pursuit of WOW! by Tom Peters, page 38

These four words not only caught my attention, but struck a tender nerve from page 38. Why do so many people feel that their learning days are over once they leave high school or have earned their college degree? What are you, 18 or maybe 22 at this time of your life? When your formal education comes to an abrupt halt, you are only 25% into the game. Your productive learning years have just begun.

For lack of a better observation, I strongly feel that this is absurd behavior. I truly hope I am not defining you.

There is a saying that implies, “A year from now you will be the same person you are today if not for the books you read and the people you hang out with.” The people thing is a topic for another column. Today I am talking about reading.

I am not saying fictional stories do not contribute to your overall understanding of how things work. Fiction can be quite stimulating as well as educational. But is fiction enough?

I don’t think so. And your reading does not have to be limited to books found in the library or on the shelves of Barnes & Noble. The Internet is at your disposal night and day, and all hours in between.

Google the topic of your interest and schedule 10-20 minutes a day to expand your knowledge. That is all it takes. Try it. Your life will soon be changing for the good.
