Emotional Intelligence: Worry Has No Place in Building a Business

“As we have seen, worry is the nub of anxieties damaging mental performance of all kind.”

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Coleman, page 83

According to the Huffington Post, 85% of what we worry about never happens. According to Daniel Goleman “worry” is a primary stimulant for many mental disorders. According to me, worry is a waste of time and energy and it negatively effects your magnetic abilities to attract “happening people” into your world.

What are you worried about?

1. Your prospect will say “no?”
2. You will appear less than professional?
3. That you won’t know the answer to one of a zillion questions?
4. That nobody reads or answers your emails?
5. That you have cashed your last check and you are either headed for “the home” or will die of starvation before the Raiders win their next home game?

Allow me to save you the next four hundred sleepless nights. Items A-D will happen to you and they will happen more than once. Therefore, you need not worry about it happening because it will happen. As for letter “D,” with my entire heart and soul I do not believe this will happen to you. At least not for another couple of years.

So let’s agree on this: Worry has no place in your proactive, business-building world.

Don’t get me wrong. It is healthy and prudent to be concerned about those things that might throw a monkey wrench into your wheels of progress. Concern is healthy. Worry is not.

So let’s try to exhibit a little emotional intelligence by acknowledging that &*^& happens and that there is no benefit in losing sleep over it. The one and only question worth mulling over in your mind is “what are you going to do about it?”
