Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book: Sing Like Nobody’s Watching

“In competition you must be yourself.”

Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings From a Lifetime In Golf by Harvey Penick with Bud Shrake, page 113

Kathy Matea sang it best when she suggested that we “sing like you don’t need the money… love like you’ll never get hurt… dance like nobody is watching. It has to come from the heart if you want it to work.” These 31 words set he stage for your soon-to-be success.

Let me put an end to what I think may be your biggest success blocker. You are beginning to believe the negative print directed toward our sales profession. We all know what people think of salespeople. They define us as pushy, arrogant, manipulative, aggressive, dishonest, lying, cheating, self-serving &^*&^%^%$.

Hey, I’m the first to admit that many so-called sales professionals have earned this reputation and then some. But in all probability, these words do not define you. I know they do not define me.

But as a result of this soiled reputation, you respond by not performing the tactics required of professional salespeople. You are failing at the important task of “making things happen.”

The only other options are to “watch things happen” or to wonder, “what happened?” As for me, I strongly recommend that you make it your business to “make things happen” regardless of others think.

Which brings me back to today’s quote: Be yourself. That is the only behavior you can exhibit without trying too hard or screwing it up.

Look! I’ve said this a thousand times in the past 35 years and I will say it again today. There are only two types of people you will ever come in contact with. (1) Those you can help, and (2) the other kind. Your job is to find more #1’s and stop trying to convince #2 that you are worthy of their time and money.

This simple philosophy, when coupled with you being yourself, is all the positioning statement you will need to make your business grow and thrive as the years unfold.

Stop worrying what others may think.  Be yourself. It truly will become your game-changing competitive edge.
