The 3 Keys to Empowerment: The Combination of Competence and Commitment

“…a combination of competence and commitment.”

The 3 Keys to Empowerment by Ken Blanchard, John P. Carlos, and Alan Randolph

Combination. Competence. Commitment: The 3 C’s. I found myself thinking about these three words when I spotted them in the book The Three Keys To Empowerment.

Let’s look at “competence” first. In the travel industry there are two types of competence. There is the competence required to call yourself a travel professional, have a business card printed, and do what needs doing to qualify for a few travel perks now and then. You are competent to perform the tasks that everybody else can perform for themselves. Competence as defined here runs rampant in the travel industry.

Then there is the competence required to relate with people, understand their personal preferences and financial limitations, recommend and suggest valuable options, and be ready and capable to handle any and all unforeseen emergencies.

Another way to define competence is with the words proficiency, capability, and know-how. To earn your stripes in the travel profession, you have to be willing to study and learn how to bring value to your client’s world. True competence comes with years of practice. And to most adults, practice does not come naturally.

Next comes “commitment.” Too many people today give “lip-service” to this element of the equation. “Talk is cheap” they say. No truer words have ever been spoken.

It is not until one commits to their goals, plans, and objectives that progress can be realized. It is nothing short of magical once you discipline yourself to focus on what needs doing to achieve your personal target. The trick is not to allow outside forces to influence your daily progress. You must commit to your mission.

But it is the “combination” of the two that leads to pay dirt. A lot like synergism, when the final result appears larger than the sum of the parts, (once you combine competence with commitment) your world will begin to take on a whole new meaning.

You will find yourself (1) achieving more, (2) enjoying more, (3) smiling more and (4) making more money. That is a lot of “mores.”
