Speak Like A CEO: Celebrate Yourself

“Tip #10: Take time to celebrate success”

Speak Like A CEO by Suzanne Bates, page 181

This quote brings me to a story I tell during my live seminars. I ask the audience to envision a hockey game. They are sitting at center ice watching the proceedings. The skaters skate from left to right and back again. They bump into each other and a few players fall down and slide into the boards. A guy takes a shot and misses, before everybody skates toward the other end of the rink. This scenario continues for the next 20 minutes with sweat flying and fists flailing. The puck rolls, flies, and bounces for what appears to be continuous futile attempts at scoring a goal.

But then as if the result of a magical flick of the wrist, the puck soars toward the net, bounces off of somebody’s leg padding, hits the goal post, and reflects into the net. In more cases than not, the guy who shot the puck then falls down. A red light on top of the net begins to flash and a siren sounds while the TV announcer screams into his microphone:  GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!

And that is when it happens. The scoring team pursues the scorer and to the man, the entire team jumps on top of him pummeling him while celebrating like there was no tomorrow. I get tired just writing about it.

The truth is that scoring a goal in hockey is difficult. The players have to work hard for very little results most of the evening. Their intentions are good. They are skilled athletes. They know what they are doing and how to do it. Yet the results are few and far between. At the very best they often get punched in the eye either by accident or on purpose. (What a game!)

But when they are successful, they do not take it for granted. Far from it. They celebrate their victory even if it is short-lived. They reward themselves after each small victory.

And so it should be with you and your business. You work hard everyday and more often than not, you have very little to show for it. But success does surface now and then in your business, and your response is to “get back to work.” Wrong-amundo!

This makes no sense. The next time something (anything) good happens to you or your crew, take the time to acknowledge your success and celebrate as a team.

You don’t have to mug each other or pummel each other into submission, but you can buy a pizza, crack open a bottle of wine, go bowling, or buy a few balloons. (I strongly suggest a little wine over a bouquet of balloons.)

Work hard. Play hard. Celebrate often. (And call Uber if necessary to insure you get to party again.)
