Pace yourself.

Similar to tone, you would be doing yourself a great service if you slowed your pace of speech to give the receiver ample time to digest your message.

When we get excited, nervous or uncomfortable we tend to hurry our speech. This can often times become hard to follow and chances of losing interest are compounded.

Don’t speak too quickly.

I like to use the “pause” to help slow everything down. It gives both parties time to think, reflect, interpret and digest before moving forward. It is also a great tool to bring the attention back to you.

Try it. Pause for three seconds before speaking. At first it will feel like an eternity but it is only three seconds. If you can master the “pause,” you will be well on your way of becoming an effective communicator.
