Tip #12: Don’t Be Too Quick To Judge

This is Tip #12 from my Special Report written for recent high school graduates. It is also relevant to most adults. (Make that all adults.)

All people have “bad hair days.” Although most of us are good at heart, we all can show our weak side now and then. Try not to judge people during their “momentary” lapse in behavior. Give people the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.

I bet you consider yourself to be one of the good guys or gals. Am I right? Let me ask you another question. Have you ever been a jerk? Once again, I am betting that you answered this question with a sheepish grin and another “yes.”

This is important to remember in times of judgment. You are a nice person. You also, on occasion, showcase the behaviors of a less than nice person. The same holds for others in your world.

Most people are nice by nature, but at times, they can exhibit less than attractive behavior. The reason for this is because they are human, just as you are human. And as humans, we reserve the right to be jerks now and then. When we are tired, hungry, or just plain “pissed-off” for some reason, our “jerk gene” surfaces and overrides our attractive DNA.

The secret is to remember this the next time you are confronted with a person who you consider to be less than squared away. Give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment because chances are they are going through their temporary jerk stage. They will soon reappear as themselves…a really nice person.

That being said, there are a number of whining, boring, negative creeps out there. Once you are sure that you are in the presence of one of these dead-beats, high-tail it out of there without delay. Don’t pause to say good-bye. Just disappear. Adios amigos. Ciao. Sayonara. Bye-bye. Cheerio. Color you “gone.”

News Flash: Misery loves company. Don’t hang around negative people for fear that you may begin mirroring their behavior.
