Tip #13: Be On Time

This is Tip #13 from my Special Report written for recent high school graduates. It is also relevant to most adults. (Make that all adults.)

Being on time for appointments, meetings, and scheduled events is a sign of respect. You will be silently judged accordingly. Being late is a selfish act.

There once was a famous professional football coach in Green Bay who went by the name of Vince Lombardi. Perhaps you’ve heard of late. His reputation is held in great esteem, and the Super Bowl Trophy is still named after him (The Lombardi Trophy). He coined the phrase “Lombardi Time.” For his scheduled meetings, if his players were not in their seats 10-minutes prior to the beginning of the meeting, they were considered late and paid significant consequences.

As a salesman, I internalized this practice for over 30 years. Sales professionals, in general, are almost always early for meetings. Sadly, this is not the case for most people.

I urge you to adopt “Lombardi Time” as your way of showing up for all events, appointments, meetings, and the like. In fact, if you want extra brownie points, phone your intended meeting organizer while en route to put their mind at rest. This may sound like overkill, but very few people practice this courtesy, and you will immediately distinguish yourself from others in the group.
