Tip #9: Ask For Help

This tip is from my Special Report written for recent high school graduates. It is also relevant to most adults. (Make that all adults.)

It is not a sign of weakness to ask for help when needed. In fact, it is a true sign of a mature individual who knows and appreciates the contributions of others. I urge you to ask for help when needed, before it is too late.

One of the best-kept secrets between adults and young people is the fact that when young people show a genuine interest in seeking advice, the “geezers” of the world (anybody over the age of 50 to you) are eager and willing to help. The operative two words are “genuine interest.” You must show sincere appreciation when seeking assistance and appreciation.

Most adults enjoy sharing their hard-earned lessons. This is particularly true when their experience can help a young person avoid needless confusion or pain. The bad news is that very few people your age seek advice.

I’m not suggesting that you take the shortcut and expect something for nothing. You’re not asking people to do things for you; you are asking them to help you understand or accomplish a difficult task. Their calluses and hard-earned personal contacts are easy to share…but not to just anybody. You must be genuinely interested in receiving council.

It’s also very important after receiving help to acknowledge that help in the form of a written thank you note, letter, or card. (Emails are easy and fast and too impersonal to make a lasting impression.) This is HUGE. This is important.
