Will Mick Jagger Ever Retire?

I must admit it was a few years ago when I spotted the article in the Sun Sentinel that read: “Stones fans can’t get no satisfaction.” Years later, the message still holds water. Hear me out.

As you may know, Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones and his cohorts in music, put the energizer bunny to shame. Those guys keep going and going and going. But in this particular article, the reporter who attended a Rolling Stone Concert interpreted things from a slightly different angle.

When you buy a ticket for one of Mick’s show, you expect to be entertained to the max. And you are seldom disappointed. That is exactly what you get….what you expect. But this reporter took exception with this, and was looking for a little bit more. He wanted “more than expected.” He knew he would get great, but he wanted greater. He didn’t want cookie cutter great. He wanted extraordinary exception. I knew exactly what he was talking about. Today’s consumers are difficult to satisfy thanks to the myriad of options they have at their fingertips.

Surprising; your customers are looking to receive more than they might expect. You need to combine a little uniqueness to your exceptional out-of-this-world service. That is what will position you as the go-to-source.

And the bad news is that then you have to do it all over again. A mediocre approach will cost you business. Good will might salvage the order, but exceptional will keep their attention for a long while. Then you have to go right back to the drawing board and get creative again.

The next time you find yourself dealing with your customer, I want you to think about Mick and the boys. Give your customers what they expect, and then give them something unexpected.

Mick is in his sixties (maybe 70 by now), and still giving his fans exactly what they expect. But maybe, just maybe, it is time that he gives his fans what they don’t expect…a little bit more. This does not have to be hard…just different…just….new. Give your clients a pleasant surprise. Think about it. Work at it. Do it.
